DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK

After several long months, we have finally been granted 'cultural organisation' status, which basically allows us affordable access to community spaces in BCN.

I'm really happy to be able to announce the coming of the next Flea event a week on Saturday.  The spaces are flying out so get on the case if you want in, especially if you're of the male persuasion, we need dudes in the place.

Plus if you're bringing your kids, we have a collage workshop run by non other than outsider-art supercrack Mike Swaney, make sure you reserve a place though.

For more info, the usual address applies: fleamarketbcn@gmail.com.

See you soon marketeers.

Fashion Reloaded @ Direktorenhaus September 23rd 2010

On September 23rd 2010 Direktorenhaus and Fashion Reloaded invite you to question the potential of your forgotten clothes by bringing them to swap and reload!
Once swapped, the garments can be redesigned and restyled at the fully equipped workshop. We provide materials, tools, sewing machines, practical assistance and an inspiring upcycling environment.

Join this workshop which not only changes the garments but also the perception of anyone who dares to swap and reload!

Fashion Reloaded also features Ilikemystyle the world’s first entirely user generated fashion magazine, with their pop-up fan store! The store will present "fan" merchandise utterly dialectically: a store filled with T-shirts, magazines, nail polish which will fascinate both the generators and consumers of Ilikemystyle. In addition the store will host an impromptu photo booth to snap your newly Fashion Reloaded outfit, user generated video footage, recycled T-shirts and of course the magazine itself. Open Culture and Fashion: New Ways of Fashion and Trend Manufacturing. A Moderated Panel Discussion

Direktorenhaus are delighted to welcome Dr Oliver Vodeb from Openwear a meta-fashion label based on open source philosophy, Cecilia Palmer and Sophie Bayerlein designers and co-initiators of Fashion Reloaded, and Adriano Sack co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of I like my style. The discussion will be moderated by free culture and open design advocate Andrea Goetzke.

This takes place:

Thursday 23.09.2010, 15.00
Workshop & Swap 15.00 – 20.00
Discussion "New Ways of Fashion and Trend Manufacturing" 19.00 – 20.00

Theres so many things to talk about I dont know where to start....check out the website www.dublinflea.ie for a better idea of who we are and hopefully we'll keep some regular posts going on this great little blog.

So now, any future visits to Dublin will have to coincide with the last sunday of the month to come down and say hi to us.

Lonely Planet Interview With The Brooklyn Fleameisters

Is there nothing better than a sunny afternoon spent poking around a flea market, fuelled by home-made snacks? In Brooklyn? We recently discovered the fabulous, delicious Brooklyn Flea and decided to ask Eric Demby, one of its founders, a few questions.
Who started Brooklyn Flea? And why?
I co-founded the Flea with Jonathan Butler, my partner and founder/publisher of Brownstoner.com, Brooklyn's biggest blog. Jonathan organized a "Salvage Fest" in the same neighborhood as the Flea in 2007 with about 10 architectural salvage dealers, and it went so well he thought about expanding it. He and I share a love for the bygone Chelsea and Manhattan flea markets of yore, and agreed that the idea of a Brooklyn Flea had legs.
Jonathan and I knew each other from working for the Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. When Jonathan mentioned he was thinking about starting a flea market, I was looking for a lifestyle change. This was the perfect project for my Brooklyn/community/curating spirit. Jonathan nailed down the schoolyard in Fort Greene, I set about finding 150 vendors for our opening day, curating them with an eye toward quality, threw in the Red Hook Food Vendors and some other foodies and hired a marching band to play opening day. 20,000 people came, the Times did a photo shoot, and here we are.
What has been your greatest, and spookiest, flea market find?I loved the stackable footstools from the Mary Tyler Moore Show set a lot. I have a gorgeous yellow glass modern lamp from Sweden that's a fave too. Spookiest? Gotta be the display case tandem of actual pulled teeth and rusty dental instruments. Literally made my teeth ache, like nails on a chalkboard. But awesome!
What do you look for in a potential vendor?
A certain level of professionalism, which translates to showing up as scheduled, paying on time, etc. I'm always curating the market toward this ideal balance of vintage/antiques, craft/design, food, and new clothing and jewelry. I like each vintage person to be distinctive in some way, for the food to be made locally and in small batches and sold by the maker when possible, for the clothing to be unique and not mass-produced (also sold by the maker if possible), and in general for vendors to sell things that shoppers can only find at the Flea. That's how we've made the markets such a destination.
Have any fights ever broken out over a particularly sought-after item?
I have never seen that happen personally, but I know that a pair of Italian lamps my wife and I coveted were sold literally from under our nose while we standing in the vendor's booth and discussing the price we would offer. We were pissed.
Describe an average day at the flea - the sights, smells, sounds and vibe.
In Fort Greene on Saturdays, it's all about the vibe. We have a core group of 100-plus vendors who come every week and love to interact with the local and visitor customers, which creates a sort of community spirit rather than a profit-minded market. (We have our share of crabby vendors too, who we love.) Our DJ Jay Stewart (longtime disco/garage head, helped start the Central Park roller-boogie spot) plays groovy tunes from on top of the bleachers by the school, the cutest collection of hipster guys and gals try on crazy outfits and buy them for $20, tourists from Japan buy vintage records, grandmas buy vintage and handmade jewelry, a Scavenger Hunt winner finds the hidden antique lunchbox prize and screams with delight, and a young couple carries their new/vintage Herman Miller armchair out of the yard. The smells: fresh-ricotta cannoli, artisanal grilled cheese, Salvadoran pupusas, fresh French croissant, the homemade wood-fired brick oven mobile pizzeria, the kimchi Asia Dogs, it goes on and on.
What advice would you give to a first-time flea-er?
It's a big yard, so do a quick spin around to see the range of goods on offer that day. If you see something perfect that's a good deal, buy it immediately, because you won't be the only one who knows a good deal. Then go back to the booths you liked and delve into their goods. Always bargain the price down. Walk away if you think it's too high - a vendor will rarely let you walk away if they think you're serious about buying something. Early in the day you'll find more goods but less flexible prices; later in the day the opposite. Remember: always come to the Flea with an empty stomach!
Do you have a flea market ritual?
In the early morning (0700 local time) I always eat a mushroom and Swiss scone from my favorite pastry shop, Choice, who has a booth at the Flea. It gives me the intestinal fortitude to deal with cranky vendors for the next three hours during check-in.
How to:
Brooklyn Flea is located at Fort Greene on Saturdays and One Hanson on Sundays, inside the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. Fort Greene is closed during winter. For more information go to www.brooklynflea.com

WMP APRIL FASHION FLOHMARKT!!!

The WMP fashion flohmarkt is back! This Saturday, with indoor and outdoor stalls.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Boxhagner Platz Fleamarket

As regular readers will know, Berlin is ridiculous in the winter. Only the super hardcore frequent the scantily clad outdoor fleamarkets between the months of November and February. The wimpier majority however, opt out around October and return, ready to spend a Euro or two around..well now actually. Here are a few pics from one of our fav' haunts: Boxhagner Platz in Friedrichshain, taken just before the big freeze set in last year.

Flea Deluxe Photoreportage!

Yesterday our first Flea Deluxe event took place in the function room at Rift, Pl. Dels Angels, here in Barnawood.  A more intimate spot it was, and fearing some sort of human crush of frenzied shoppers, we kept street promotion to a minimum, and the word-of-mouth approach seemed to pull in a great deal of hipsters with an eye for quality and originality.

There were 9 stalls, and people clubbed in to bring down the choicest items from their collection.  They included people with clothes from promotional gigs they may have done, people from the fashion industry and a few serial Flea Marketeers too.

Credit has to go to the marketeers, as always, whose organisation and presentation of the stalls was exemplary, and also the Flea Fans who made it down despite the slight drizzle, that is normally enough to put people of leaving their houses on a Sunday.

Extra credit to Petanca Legend Hank Martini, who did a stellar job of keeping the party lubricated.

Hank Martini also is about to bust out his first album!  Recorded in a hut in Sweden, you really have to peep his troubador folk musings.  Check the previews on his myspace.  In the picture he is flexing with a faux-diamond-encrusted belt buckle which was for sale at the Flea but I cannot confirm whether or not it was sold.

The gaffer from Rift was so chuffed with the day that he has offered us the space for a repeat showing in 2 weeks!  More news to come, as soon as I invent it.  He is also open to suggestions for projects in that there space that we used.

Agur!
