¡New Flea Home!

Here's a little pic that I managed to snap in between mulled wines and wee chocolate cakes and also being very cold. Although Jo's post below detailing -10 oC conditions put things in perspective slightly.

We have a new spot with more space to circulate and potential for more to open up and exploit. We have permission to spin music again, and people didn't seem to be put off by the change in neighbourhood.

The quality of stuff on sale was once again stellar, yet a number of no-shows may make us consider a pre-payment scheme.

Hopefully next month I'll be able to document the market in more depth, and plus we've got the Flea Deluxe special event and glamour party to look forward to.

Happy Christmas from WMP Berlin!

So, following a really long hunt for a venue, the WMP Fashion Flohmarkt held it's fourth event at Betahaus last Saturday.

Despite the freezing temperatures on the day (-10 degrees!) shoppers arrived in droves to check out what was on offer.

Music was provided by Love and Mercy playing a delicious mixture of disco, house and 80's raregroove , Dimitri played a selection of old school Soul, disco and funk, while MorrisLess got our circulation going by rounding off the day with a warming selection of deep house tracks.

WMP Fashion Flohmarkt is an independent flea market and has been steadily growing from strength to strength. We're excited about what the future holds for us. WMP! wishes you a happy Christmas and looks forward to seeing you in the new year for more fun, fashion and frolics!

GARAGE SALE

Flea Market Porto has decided to celebrate this Christmas in a different way. Instead of setting up a tree, or dressing itself up with colorful balls, has decided to come down to the street, or to put it better, to the garage.

There are several modernist garages in Oporto, and Passos Manuel's garage is one of the best examples we have.
The building was built in the beginning of the XX century (around 1940) and served as a backup to another building, located just across the street, the Oporto's Coliseum.
Together, these two buildings represented a new era in the city. One of them, the Coliseum represented innovation on account of the music, the concerts or the shows that run inside. The other, the garage, represented modernity because of all the cars that parked inside.

It is, thus, a pleasure and an honor being able to have this Christmas edition in such a special place. Besides, this way the Flea Market turns out to be a real “garage sale”.

We have beaten all the submission records and even though we have a long waiting list.
This time we will have all kind of things, all kind of 2nd hand things, of course. From the typical vinyl's, decoration objects, books, clothes to all the other stuff we got used to.
To make it even a bigger party we will have good food, sweeties and salties and a lot of hot wine, to warm up our hands and spirits. It is Christmas after all.

So, if you're in Oporto next Saturday, 19th, you cannot miss this opportunity to come and shop at the garage. We will be open from 3.00pm to 8.00pm, and with us on the mix we'll have Dj Fernando Dias and his funky beats as well as ApartD22 who will bring us his best selection on electronic vibes.
We believe that this Christmas edition will be unforgettable, and who knows, maybe next time we'll need a bigger garage?

Happy Holidays and LONG LIVE THE FLEA!

PS. We'll be posting some photos soon…..

New York's Flea Markets

New York..... New York is the city of my dreams. Mine and of many others, I am sure. That is why every time I can, every time I have an excuse or opportunity, even though I don't like to fly, I get into an airplane and there I go. That's what happened this time as well, an opportunity came, just another excuse, and I didn't think twice. I went! When arriving there the same sensation as before….as really being in “a city that doesn't sleep”. No matter where, or what time, there is always someone in the street, some open bar or store. There's always animation, confusion, culture, entertainment, life! Just wondering around on those streets, among the people or the buildings is some kind of rewarding. From downtown to uptown, from East to West the neighborhoods succeed continuously, ones after the others. All different and unique, yet part of a bigger set. There are, however, certain repetitions that contribute to the unit of the city. Some of these repetitions are the Flea Markets. They exist in almost every neighborhood, with different sizes or shapes, exclusively dedicated to second hand, or not. It is a kind of deal that has its roots in the city itself; it's a way of living that was born from real necessities, from real lacks. I think that is why everyone who visits NY should see, at least, one Flea Market. I have visited several of them and still I am sure I have not seen even half. It's easy to make a quick search and find a lot of different addresses to go, then you just have to decide! I also noticed repetitions here, similarities. All the Fleas I have been have common traces, the vinyl's, the decoration object's, the knick-knack, clothes… But it's not just that, it's the way of displaying the stands, the way of positioning in space, the way of looking and being. Most of them are located in parking lots; empty spaces between buildings, spaces with a specific function reinvented for a couple of days a week. One of my favorites is the Sunday Brooklyn Flea. And it is this one because on Sundays it is located under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side (of course!) looking at Manhattan. This is a special place, but the Flea is also special. It's a chic Flea, more then others, a true vintage paradise! You can find everything here, in pretty good conditions and variety. Although it has a lot of people visiting, the place is wide and you can relax and enjoy your search, easily. If hunger or cold start pressing you, you can always stop for a while at the food and beverage stands they have and enjoy their specialties. This is a total Flea, with everything we deserve! So, it was with a little sorrow that I saw the night falling on us. I had to say good-bye to the bridge, to the flea, to the city…But I know I will come back, and that is already enough for me!
